How to Clean up Your Site Links to Avoid Google Algorithmic Link Penalty
One of the important factors that Google used to find, index, and rank your site is the quality of your links. Google algorithm ranks your site on following link features.

You can download a list of your links from Google Webmasters Tool. To download links from Google Webmaster Tools.
1) Sign in to Google Webmaster Tools, Go to Webmasters Tool home page, then click the site you want.
2) Then on the dashboard Go to Search Traffic >> Links to Your Site.
2) Then on the dashboard Go to Search Traffic >> Links to Your Site.
3) From there, click “more” under “who links the most.” Then, click “download latest links.”
Note: When looking at the links to your site in Webmaster Tools, you may want to verify both the www and the non-www version of your domain in your Webmaster Tools account. To Google, these are entirely different sites. For more detailed information, you can read about them in Google Webmaster Tools Help
Now you a list of all the links that Google is using as one of its important signal to rank your site.
Review the list and look for:
- Spammy linkbacks
- Optimized anchor text
When you find harmful links, try to remove as many as possible by sending email to the webmasters of the sites and request them to remove the link.
If the webmaster does not respond or comply, and you’ve done as much work as you can to remove spammy linkbacks from the web, then use the disavow tool to remove the remaining links from your link profile.
